Uzbekistan Launches National “Safe Road” Program
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has announced the launch of the national program “Safe Road,” aimed at reducing the number of road traffic accidents through comprehensive improvements to the country’s road infrastructure.
As part of this initiative, the operations of the Republican Fund “Safe Road and Safe Pedestrian” will be reorganized. The fund will now operate under the direct supervision of the Government and will be granted expanded authority.
Dedicated branches of the fund will be established in all regions of the country. The total volume of funds expected to be allocated to the fund’s budget from all sources in 2025 is estimated at 400 billion soums. In addition, 25% of all traffic fines collected through the national photo and video traffic surveillance system will be directed to the fund and its regional departments.
Companies responsible for the installation of road signs, traffic lights, and road markings will be placed under the control of regional administrations.
Particular attention will be paid to ensuring the transparency of the fund’s operations. Its board will include not only representatives of the traffic police and road services but also members of the public.
The top priority for spending will be the elimination of accident-prone zones. This will include the installation of median barriers, road signs, lighting systems, the organization of safe pedestrian crossings, and the digitalization of intersections.
The “Safe Road” national program is designed to protect all road users and to create modern, convenient, and safe traffic conditions throughout the country.
Last year, 9,364 road traffic accidents were recorded in Uzbekistan, resulting in injuries to nearly 9,000 citizens.
