Uzbekistan joins the OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan participates in the 28th annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which takes place in Luxembourg and is dedicated to promoting sustainable development in order to strengthen security and the role of parliaments in this direction.

On the first day of the 28th session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly at a plenary session, Chairman of the Assembly, George Tsereteli, in his speech noted that lawmakers play a special role in promoting security, development, democracy, environmental protection, improving the lives of the population, ensuring good governance.

Along with participation in the work of relevant committees, the delegation of Uzbekistan also participated in the meeting of the Silk Road Support Group at the OSCE PA. It is worth noting that the Support Group, which was established in 2017, includes 24 OSCE participating States.

The main task of the Group is to promote the development of transport corridors, simplify trade and transport procedures, free and safe movement of persons, goods and services. Following the event, it was announced that Uzbekistan joined the Silk Road Support Group.

It was underlined that the entry of the republic into this group will significantly expand the potential and opportunities for legislative support and support of processes aimed at the development of transport and logistics infrastructure, as well as economic ties between countries located along key trade routes.

The accession of the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the activities of this Group was a logical continuation of the efforts of our country to meet the challenges of increasing the transport and logistics potential, ensuring international and regional interconnectedness. As noted in the speech of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in May this year at the international forum “One Belt, One Road”, the implementation of initiatives on the Silk Road is an important factor in the development of the region.

During the session, the delegation of Uzbekistan also participated in the meeting of the OSCE PA Standing Committee, which resulted in the extension of the term of office of the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly Roberto Montell.

The parliamentarians also approved the composition of the members of the three general committees, adopted the OSCE PA budget for 2019–2020, and determined the venue for the 29th annual session - Vancouver (Canada).

The work of the 28th session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly continues.
