Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - In May 2024, the Business Activity Index (BAI), calculated by the Center for Economic Research and Reforms, amounted to 1022 points, and compared to the previous month, increased moderately by 2.2%. There is also a 7 percent increase in BAI compared to the same period last year.

The following changes were observed in BAI components

The May 2024 business activity index increased moderately by 2.2% compared to the previous month and amounted to 1022 points, due to changes in the following components:

the number of transactions on bank accounts of business entities increased by 5.6%;

the component associated with existing business entities decreased by 3.7%;

the intensity of purchases of raw materials at the commodity exchange increased moderately by 0.5%;

the brand component increased by 29.8%.

Regionally, Tashkent showed the highest growth

In May 2024, the business activity index for 8 regions increased compared to the previous month. In particular, in Tashkent (52.5%), Navoi (44.2%), Samarkand (7.2%), Bukhara (6.1%) regions and the Republic of Karakalpakstan (8.1%) there was a significant growth (Fig. 2).

At the same time, this index in 6 regions decreased. In particular, in Jizzakh (-10.0%), Surkhandarya (-6.7%) and Khorezm (-6.7%) regions there was a significant decline.

Operations with bank accounts

The number of interbank payment transactions in May 2024 amounted to 7,109.2 thousand and increased by 374.7 thousand transactions (an increase of 5.6%) compared to April 2024.

The number of banking transactions in 10 regions increased.

In May 2024, the number of banking transactions between legal entities increased in 10 regions compared to the previous month. In particular, Surkhandarya (7.6%), Namangan (5.4%), Kashkadarya (5.2%), Jizzakh (4.7%) regions and Tashkent city (6.7%) experienced significant growth.

Activity on the commodity exchange

In May 2024, the exchange component of BAI was 1.0050. This represents a modest 0.5% increase in component levels compared to the previous month. This growth is associated with an increase in the average physical volume of goods purchased in each transaction by 6.2%. At the same time, the number of transactions decreased by 5.2%.

At the Republican Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange, the total turnover in May 2024 amounted to 6,745.1 billion soums, which is 3.8% less than the previous month.

Activity of economic entities

The component of operating business entities in May 2024 amounted to 0.9629, which means a decline in the component by 3.7% compared to the level of the previous month. And also, this indicator has a negative value compared to the same period last year with a moderate decline of 3.8%.

The number of operating business entities in May 2024 decreased by 7,236 units compared to April 2024 (496,302 units) and amounted to 489,066 units.

The number of large enterprises decreased by 429 units.

During the reporting period, the number of small enterprises decreased from 400,491 to 395,364 units, which is a decrease of 5,127 units. Also, the number of farms decreased from 91,547 to 89,867 units, which is 1,680 units less. The number of operating large enterprises amounted to 3,835 units, which is 429 units less compared to April 2024.

Brands registration

In May 2024, the Index of Protected Trademarks was 1.2983, an increase of 29.8% compared to the previous month. This month, legal entities registered 383 trademarks and trade names.
