Uzbekistan introduces a driver penalty points system

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law on 21 February introducing a penalty points system for drivers in Uzbekistan.

Under the new system, penalty points will be assigned for certain traffic violations in addition to standard fines or other penalties. These points remain valid for one year from the date of the violation and are then automatically annulled.

A single violation can result in up to two penalty points. If a driver accumulates more than 12 points within a year, they may lose their driving privileges for up to six months from the date of the last recorded offense.

The law also establishes administrative liability for:

– Violations of passenger transportation rules;
– Improper overtaking;
– Failure to comply with safety regulations for vehicles operating on compressed or liquefied natural gas;
– Aggressive driving and road hooliganism;
– Spreading misleading photo or video materials about law enforcement officers to discredit them.

Additionally, the law introduces criminal liability for:

– Repeated violations of transport safety regulations for gas-powered vehicles;
– Driving under the influence or refusing a sobriety test;
– Driving after license revocation;
– Violating regulations on driver training, examination, and licensing;
– Forging vehicle license plates.

The law takes effect upon its official publication.
