Economy 04/09/2009 Uzbekistan increases steel output by 9.4% y-o-y in January-August

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzmetkombinat, Uzbek steel producer, produced 527,500 tonnes of steel in the first eight months of the year. The growth rate made up 9.4% year-on-year.

Uzmetkombinat’s steel roll output in the period increased 7.9% year-on-year to 487,400 tonnes.

The Uzbek steel producer uses steel scrap for smelting, supplied by other Central Asian states. The supplies have dwindled lately.

In 2008, the steel smelter invested US$9.5 million in upgrades, which accounts for the increase in output.

The smelter produced 674,300 tonnes of steel, 4.5% more than in 2007, and 643,100 tonnes of steel roll, an increase of 3.8% year-on-year in 2008.
