Uzbekistan discuss development of renewable energy
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- State Committee of Uzbekistan on nature protection, International Public Fund Ecosan, Ecologic publishing company Chinor organized a press conference in Tashkent titled “Experience and perspectioves of renewable energy in Uzbekistan” on 10 August 2012.

It was noted that energy plays key role in life of each person and the society as a whole. In last 40 years, demand for energy rose significantly. The production of fuel increase significantly. Currently, energy equal to some 12 billion tonnes of oil used in the world each year or 2 tonnes per person.

Main sources of energy are gas, coal and uranium. If the volume of their use continues in this level, oil reserves will be enough for 45-50 years, natural as – 70-75 years, coal – 165-170 years and brown coal – 450-500 years.

Renewable energy is only alternative source of energy. At the same time, renewable energy’s negative impact to environment is lesser compared to traditional source of energy. The renewable energy can also serve as factor for solving social problems, including employment.

Uzbekistan is one of the countries, which achieved energy independence. Uzbekistan produces electricity, natural gas and oil products. Renewable energy helps to save hydrocarbon resources, ensure energy security of the country, supply electricity and heating energy to population and businesses.

Currently Uzbekistan has significant experience in this direction. Despite large expenses for installation, use of renewable energy is economically viable. Growth of prices for energy resources and development of renewable energy makes alternative energy competitive.

Usually, renewable energy cannot fully supply energy to large settlements, industrial enterprises and establishments, but Uzbekistan has good opportunities to use renewable energy in remote and ecologically adverse regions.

Climate and geographic conditions of Uzbekistan allows the country use renewable energy, especially solar energy. Potential of solar energy is rated at the level of 50.973 billion tonnes of oil equivalent, which makes up 99.7% of all explored sources of renewable energy in Uzbekistan.

Solar time in Uzbekistan makes up 2,000 hours a year in north and 3,000 hours in north. Daily solar radiation makes up 7-10 hours.

Wind energy is another source of renewable energy. Potential of wind energy makes up 2.2 million tonnes of oil equivalent in Uzbekistan. In line with the geographic location of Uzbekistan, wind flow has seasonal character. Average annual wind speed makes up 2-5 meters per second.

Researches in Uzbekistan allowed to find out 8 basins of hydrothermal resources. Gross potential of hydrothermal resources is rated at 244,200 tonnes of oil equivalent, while technical potential is not determined.

Largest potential in hydrothermal resources fell to Ferghana Valley (42,600 tonnes of oil equivalent in Namangan region) and Bukhara region – 81,200 tonnes of fuel equivalent.
