Uzbekistan defeats Australia to extend lead in Group B
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) --
Uzbekistan U-23 claimed a 2-0 victory over Australia in freezing Tashkent on Sunday, 5 February 2012, to extend their lead in Group B of the London 2012 third round qualifying match.
Uzbekistan started the match in attacking style and Kenja Turaev opened the score in the 27th minute after shot from around 23 meters.
Australia scored an equalizer in the 40th minute of the match, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside.
In the second half, the Olyroos scored another goal, but the goal of Mitch Nicholls was disallowed for an infringement in the penalty area.
Oleg Zoteev secured the win for the home team with a sublime volley in the 85th minute. After the victory, Uzbekistan has eight points and needs one victory in next to match to book tickets to London Olympic Games.
