Uzbekistan, Cuba sign protocol on political consultations
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Cuba signed a protocol on political consultations between foreign ministries of two states, Jahon news agency of Uzbekistan Foreign Ministry reported.

The document was inked within the visit of the delegation led by Cuban Ambassador to Uzbekistan with residence in Moscow Juan Valdes Figueroa to Uzbekistan.

During the visit, the delegation held negotiations with Uzbekistan Foreign Ministry and the sides discussed issues on expanding bilateral cooperation. The sides also signed a protocol on political consultations between foreign ministries of Uzbekistan and Cuba.

Cuban envoy briefed the Uzbek side on current situation in Cuba and received information on social-economic reforms in Uzbekistan, including about anti-crisis measures, long-term strategy for economic development. The envoy also familiarized with key initiatives of Uzbekistan within regional and international structures, including measures on stabilization of situation in Afghanistan.

Juan Valdes Figueroa underlined that the signed protocol is important step in developing bilateral relations, strengthening ties, which always “differ with friendly and positive character”.

Figueroa said that the meeting was aimed at concretizing issues of deepening and expanding cooperation between Uzbekistan and Cuba. He said that the sides have good perspectives for cooperation in trade-economic relations, including in medicine and pharmaceuticals, international within the international organizations, inter-parliamentary cooperation, cultural-education exchanges, tourism and others.

The report said that current trade-economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Cuba does not correspondent to existing opportunities. The sides also boosted interaction within the international organizations, including the United Nations. Cuba regularly supports position of Uzbekistan within the activity of the UN Commission on human rights. Havana supported initiative on signing agreement on nuclear free zone in Central Asia at the 61st (2006) and 63rd (2008) session of the UN General Assembly and voted for resolution on the free zone.
