Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In the first 10 months of 2024, courts in Uzbekistan held 15,826 people accountable for domestic violence, according to a report by the spokesperson of the Supreme Court, Aziz Abidov.
Under Article 59-2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses concerning family (domestic) violence, 15,427 individuals were held accountable.
Of these, 9,210 were fined, while 6,217 were subjected to administrative arrest.
Additionally, 399 individuals were convicted for domestic violence committed repeatedly or with aggravating circumstances under Article 126-1 of the Criminal Code. Among them, 126 received prison sentences, 255 received non-custodial penalties, and 18 were conditionally sentenced.
It is noteworthy that in April 2023, the President of Uzbekistan signed amendments to legislation aimed at protecting the rights of women and children. These changes criminalized domestic violence and introduced sanctions for sexual harassment.
Since the amendments came into effect, more than 9,100 individuals were convicted by the end of 2023.
