Uzbekistan could not score against Jordan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Hosts Uzbekistan were unable to build on their AFC U-16 Championship opening day victory as their second Group A encounter ended in a goalless draw against Jordan at Pakhtakor Stadium on Tuesday.

The score line, however, belied Uzbekistan’s performance as they dominated the game for the majority but were unable to deliver the knockout blow that would have put Jordan in clear danger of elimination from the group.

Jordan keeper Mohammad Abunabhan - along with the team’s back line - proved more than a match for the constant barrage of attacks that the Uzbeks had to offer and his display ensured the Jordanians would live to fight another day for qualification.

The hosts tested Abunabhan just four minutes into the game with Azizbek Murotov firing a low shot from inside the box that the custodian was able to smother.

Uzbekistan were virtually camped inside the Jordanian half for the early part of the contest and the pressure nearly paid off as a ninth-minute free-kick by Timur Khakimov from the right sailed dangerously over the bar.

Jordan were struggling to keep possession and Khakimov let slip a good chance to break the deadlock when he latched on to defender Alison Mansurov’s 21st minute cross at the near post, but missed completely as the ball flew across the Jordanian six-yard box.

And just four minutes later, Murotov’s cross from the left was neatly headed by Abbosbek Makhstaliev only for it to go inches over the bar.

Jordan coach Jonathan Hill attempted to shake things up with a 30th minute change, bringing on midfielder Saleh Saleh in place of defender Majd Ananzeh but just two minutes later Jordan were pushed back into defensive mode, with Zabikhillo Urinboev’s header off a corner bouncing dangerously and requiring a fingertip save from Abunabhan.

Uzbekistan pressed further and in first-half stoppage time Mansurov’s long-range effort was easily collected as the hosts left the field clearly in the driving seat.

Following the restart Hill continued to push men into attack, replacing midfielder Ahmad Israiwah with striker Abdel Ghaith in the 55th minute.

However, the Uzbeks dominated possession once again and with 63 minutes gone Mansurov again found his attacking stride, putting a flighted cross in from the left but Urinboev’s header could only graze the bar on its way over.

Substitute Ghaith finally gave Jordan their first real attempt of the match but his 72nd minute drive in from the right went harmlessly past Uzbek keeper Ganisher Kholmurodov’s left-hand post.

Abunabhan at the other continued to thwart the Uzbek strikers, snuffing out a lofted cross from the right in the 87th minute with Khakimov rushing in for the header.

And Ghaith might have had an opportunity to snatch an unlikely win for Jordan with last real move of the match, shaking off an Uzbek defender to latch on to a superb through ball, but his run was ended by Kholmurodov.
