Uzbekistan considers abolishing mandatory reconciliation period in divorce cases for victims of domestic violence
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan may eliminate the mandatory reconciliation period in divorce proceedings for victims of domestic violence, according to the press service of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.
On 11 February, the Senate Committee on Youth, Women, Culture, and Sports reviewed a series of amendments to the Family and Housing Codes, as well as to the Law "On Guarantees of Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men."
The proposed document includes measures aimed at strengthening the protection of victims of domestic violence and preventing repeated cases of abuse, the official statement said.
Under the proposed changes, courts will no longer be required to set a reconciliation period in divorce cases if the victim requests to waive it.
It is expected that this provision will help reduce the risk of severe crimes in families where acts of violence and oppression are systematic, the document emphasizes.
The Committee noted that the adoption of this law would be an important step toward strengthening women's rights and ensuring their safety.
