Uzbekistan collects 6.8m tonnes of grain
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Grain-growers of Uzbekistan collected about 6.8 million tonnes of grain, the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov said in a congratulation letter to farmers.

In his congratulation letter, Uzbek President Islam Karimov said that farmers faced difficulties this year due to difficult weather conditions and water shortage.

Uzbek leader said that it was difficult to ensure equal growth of winter crops due to low level of precipitations in autumn and spring. This situation in many regions resulted in loss of grain at dry lands. There were also problems in irrigated lands due to water shortage, he said. Uzbek head said that this required hard work and great skill from the farmers.

President Islam Karimov said that average crop yield in Andijan, Bukhara, Ferghana, Samarkand and Tashkent region made up 53-64 centners per hectare. He added that the yield in some district made up 74-88 centners per hectare.

Uzbek leader recalled that Uzbekistan produced 940,000 tonnes of grain in 1991 and the yield made up 17 centners. This year, the grain production increased seven times and yield grew three times.
