Uzbekistan calls for rational use of water in Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN Murad Askarov drew attention to Aral sea problem and called for rational use of water resources at trans-boundary rivers of Central Asia.

Speaking at the session of General Assembly on International Action Decade “Water for Life 2005-2015”, he said these rivers always satisfied demands of states located in their basin. Today, it is interest of over 50 million people, living in the region, he said.

He said some states of the region are trying to attract large investment of donors for construction of large hydro power stations in upper flow of Amudarya and Syrdarya and projects of them were developed 40 years ago. He said the sides are attracting low attention to negative impact of these objects to ecologic balance in the region.

Murad Askarov called for rational and effective use of water resources in the region based on generally accepted international norms and considering interests of all states in the region. He called to carry out independent international expertise of large hydropower stations, which have trans-boundary impact, the UN News Center reported.

Uzbek envoy stated that Uzbekistan disclaims special rights in water resource management in the region and its position is aimed at ensuring long-term stability and economic growth in all states of Central Asia.

Askarov said water use and environment protections become actual issues each year. He said these issues can be key factor for expansion of regional cooperation or serve as barrier.
