Uzbekistan bans the activities of foreign political parties

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a law amending certain legislative acts of the country. The law was passed by the Legislative Chamber on 11 June and approved by the Senate on 22 June.

According to the new law, the creation and activities of political parties of foreign states and their branches on the territory of Uzbekistan are prohibited.

The annual amount of state funds allocated for financing political parties now amounts to 2.5% of the base estimated value set as of 1 January, multiplied by the number of citizens included in the voter lists in the last elections to the Legislative Chamber. Previously, this figure was 2% of base estimated value.

Furthermore, 40% of the funds are distributed equally among political parties, while 60% is distributed among political parties proportionally to the number of parliamentary seats they have obtained in the Legislative Chamber.

Currently, Uzbekistan has five registered political parties: the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businesspeople – Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party "Milliy Tiklanish" ("National Revival"), the Social Democratic Party "Adolat" ("Justice"), the People's Democratic Party, and the Ecological Party.

The next parliamentary elections will be held in the fall; the previous elections took place in 2019.
