Uzbekistan and South Korea discuss projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 10 May, representatives of the Department of Green Economy Development of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan held a meeting with representatives of various companies from South Korea to discuss new projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The event was attended by Korea Climate Change Institute CEO Shin Young-won and researcher Lee Geun-young, as well as representatives from Korea Investment & Securities and Korea Western Power.

Representatives of Korean companies presented information on current and planned projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Uzbekistan.

In particular, a project in Karakalpakstan to produce energy using 50 tons of bio-pellets per day from licorice waste was considered. It was also noted that research is underway to expand this experiment in the Samarkand and Fergana regions.

The Farmergy plant in Karakalpakstan already produces 50 tons of biopellets per day, and in the future it is planned to use other sources, such as sunflower, for the production of pellets.

A project for installing heat pumps in hospitals, greenhouses, as well as in multi-storey residential and non-residential buildings was also presented.

A pilot project in the field of energy saving is planned to be launched in Urgench, Khorezm region.

The parties reached an agreement to conduct research on the possibilities of localizing the production of Korean “green” technologies in Uzbekistan, and the Korean side expressed its readiness to provide its advanced technologies and experience.

As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue negotiations on the development of mutually beneficial and promising cooperation.
