Uzbekistan and Russia sign an agreement on the construction of small nuclear power plants

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Russia signed an agreement on cooperation in the construction of small nuclear power plants.

The document was signed on 27 May 2024 following negotiations between the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in Tashkent.

Vladimir Putin noted that the signed agreement opens up the possibility for the construction of small nuclear power plants in Uzbekistan.

The head of Russia emphasized that the stations will be built using modern Russian technologies that meet the most stringent safety and environmental protection requirements.

– Almost all leading countries in the world ensure their energy security and sustainable development through nuclear energy. Having large own reserves of uranium and exporting it to third countries, this project is vital for us if we think about the prospects for entering a new stage of development of Uzbekistan,” President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized.

As part of cooperation, Uzbekistan and Russia plan to build a small nuclear power plant, which will include up to six power units with a capacity of 55 MW each.
