Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan approve project for installing automated water metering systems on Syrdarya river

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have agreed on the technical specifications for installing automated water metering systems at 10 locations along the Syrdarya River.

Five of these locations are situated in Kazakhstan, while the other five are in Uzbekistan.

The project is being implemented with the participation of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), and funding discussions are ongoing with international organizations.

According to Nurlan Aldamjarov, Deputy Minister of Water Resources of Kazakhstan, these 10 sites are just the beginning of a large-scale initiative.

The plan is to automate all key hydrological posts in the future to ensure transparency in the management of water resources.

Earlier, in the first four months of 2024, Uzbekistan sent around 4 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan. Additionally, the two countries agreed on supplying an additional 922 million cubic meters of water via the "Dostyk" canal for the irrigation season. These agreements were reached during the 86th session of the Interstate Coordinating Water Management Commission, which includes Central Asian countries.
