Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A meeting at the Ministry of Economy and Finance with representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) discussed the development and implementation of an emissions trading system (ETS) in Uzbekistan.
An ETS is a market-based approach to environmental pollution control, providing economic incentives for reducing pollutant emissions. Currently, 36 countries utilize such systems worldwide.
Attendees included consultants Melanie Hobson, Robert Boyce, Fernando Antolin, climate change specialist Nizomiddin Rahmanov, regional cooperation specialist Begzod Jalilov, and representatives from the ministry’s Green Economy Development Department.
The parties examined the possibility of implementing an ETS in Uzbekistan, drawing on international best practices and identifying necessary measures to encourage greenhouse gas reductions within the country.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to develop a legal framework for implementing the ETS and to expand cooperation in this area.
