Uzbekistan aims to maintain observer status in the EAEU

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  Uzbekistan does not plan to join military structures and intends to retain its status as an observer state in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This was stated by Akmal Saidov, the first deputy speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (parliament of Uzbekistan).

Saidov noted that the first article of the Constitution states that Uzbekistan is a sovereign state and ruled out the possibility of the republic participating in any militarized defense alliances.

According to him, Uzbekistan will not send its citizens abroad for military tasks, including peacekeeping missions. Additionally, no foreign military bases will be stationed on Uzbek territory, the deputy speaker added, as reported by the media.

Akmal Saidov emphasized that the status of an observer country in the EAEU is more appropriate for Uzbekistan.

He reminded that he heads the parliamentary commission studying the possibility of Uzbekistan joining the EAEU.

"We have thoroughly analyzed over a thousand various documents of this organization and concluded that, at this stage, it is more advisable for Uzbekistan to maintain its observer status in the EAEU," Saidov stated.

He also mentioned that Kazakhstan has not gained significant advantages from its membership in the EAEU.

"However, I cannot guarantee that this information is definitive. Uzbekistan has fundamental principles of foreign policy outlined in the new version of the Constitution, and we will adhere to them," Saidov explained.
