Uzbekistan 07/10/2010 Uzbekistan against construction of dams at upper reaches of Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya
Murad Askarov
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan, along with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation, believes that fresh water should be used, first of all, for production of food, Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan at the UN Murad Askarov said at the meeting of the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly.

The Uzbek envoy said that any decrease of Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya flow is fundamental violation of ecologic balance in all Aral Sea Basin.

He said: “In these conditions, we believe it is dangerous any attempts on implementation of projects on construction of wide-scale hydraulic works with giant dams, which were developed during Soviet era. This can cause irreparable damage to environment and dangerous man-caused disasters, which we witnessed in recent years.”

Uzbekistani envoy proposed to construct less dangerous, but more efficient small hydro power stations at these rivers to receive similar power capacities, the UN Radio reported.
