Uzbekgidroenergo increases electricity production and plans large-scale projects

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekgidroenergo JSC has summarized its 2024 results and presented plans for further development of Uzbekistan’s hydropower sector.

At a press conference held at the Agency of Information and Mass Communications, the company’s management highlighted record-breaking performance, major investments, and ambitious projects for 2025.

In 2024, hydropower plants operated by Uzbekgidroenergo generated 8.2 billion kWh of electricity, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year. This is the highest production level in the industry’s 100-year history.

Since the company's establishment, 55 new and modernized hydroelectric power stations with a total capacity of 430 MW have been commissioned. As a result, the total hydropower capacity of the country has reached 2.256 GW.

Over the past few years, the sector has attracted nearly US$1 billion in investments, which has not only expanded capacity but also introduced modern technologies:

A Situational Center was launched for real-time monitoring of hydropower plants and reservoirs.

Smart surveillance systems and automated sensors were installed at key facilities.

An independent procurement audit by Deloitte confirmed transparency in processes.

The company maintained its international credit rating of "BB-" (Fitch Ratings) and has retained its ISO 37001 anti-corruption certification for the third consecutive year. In 2024, its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) rating rose to 72 points—the highest in Central Asia.

This year, Uzbekgidroenergo plans to:

Increase electricity production by another 10%.

Implement 14 new projects worth US$3.3 billion.

Commission 38 new facilities with a total capacity of 222 MW.

These measures align with Uzbekistan’s Hydropower Development Strategy, approved by presidential decree.

In 2024, the company’s revenue from electricity sales amounted to 4.053 billion soums, while tax contributions to the state budget exceeded 1 trillion soums.

“Hydropower remains a key driver of Uzbekistan’s green energy sector. Our projects not only strengthen energy security but also lay the foundation for sustainable economic development,” company representatives stated.

During the press conference, Uzbekgidroenergo’s management answered journalists' questions, providing detailed insights into the industry's prospects and the mechanisms for implementing new projects.
