Uzbekenergo to build pilot wind energy facility
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- State joint stock company “Uzbekenergo” (Uzbek Energy) is planning to complete construction of pilot wind energy in Yubileyniy Village of Bostanlik district of Tashkent region of Uzbekistan.

The capacity of the facility is 750 kilowatts. The height of the facility is 65 meters and the size of fans is 50 meters each. The diameter of the tower foundation is 3.6 meters. This is the first wind energy facility in Uzbekistan and Central Asia with such parameters.

Uzbekenergo said that the area, where the energy facility will be installed, was studied for a year. The wind speed and directions were tested. The specialists also metered the temperature of the region.

Uzbekenergo added that it also studied experience of wind generator facilities of such countries as China, Germany, Denmark, Norway and South Korea.

In 2011, Uzbekenergo conducted a tender for construction of wind energy generator on “turn-key” basis and China’s XIAN ELECTRIC ENGINEERING won a tender and the agreement was signed. XINJIANG GOLD WIND SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY Co.LTD was selected for supply of wind energy generator facilities.

Currently, XIAN ELECTRIC ENGINEERING supplied the first part of technologic equipment - foundation ring, hub and blades of wind power plants. The company said that fans of the equipment are unique and they were made of reinforced glass-epoxy resin and has height of 23.5 meters. Their weight is 3 tonnes each. The equipment was transported from China to Uzbekistan on vehicles.

Pilot wind energy facility is the first step of Uzbekenergo towards use of renewable energy. In future, the company plans to increase number of wind generators and electricity will be supplied to general energy system of Uzbekistan.

The first wind energy facility with the capacity of 750 kilowatt was constructed in Charvaq water reservoir in 2010. South Korea’s Doojin Co. Ltd supplied equipment in line with the agreement of Uzbekenergo. The designer is Gidroproyekt. The project implementation will save 1.1 million cubic meters of natural gas a year. Total investments to the project make up US$2 million.

In January 2010, anemometer tower for weather observation with the height of 40 meters was installed at Charvaq water reservoir. The height of main tower is 65 meters and diameter of fans – about 56 meters. According to Uzgydromet specialists, the average annual wind speed in the region makes up 4.3 meters per second, while its speed is 6.6-7.1 meters per second in winter. This should be enough for sustainable work of the wind energy facility.

According to Uzbekenerogo, annually the facility can produce 2.3 million kilowatt-hour of electricity additionally each year. This will help Uzbekistan to save 700,000 cubic meters of natural gas a year. Charvaq project is the largest project on renewable energy in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekenerogo is planning to create part of wind power facilties with evaluated cost of US$250 million. The capacity of the park will make up 100 megawatt, which will allow to produce 170 million kilowatt-hour of electricity.
