Uzbekistan 21/12/2007 Uzbek TV shows interviews with foreign experts on polls
The programme started with a report on international observers arriving in the country. It said that out of 300 expected foreign observers, over 100 had already arrived, received their mandates and started to familiarize themselves with the activities of electoral commissions.

The report went on to show interviews with a number of foreign political experts and said they praised democratic developments in Uzbekistan. A senior research fellow of the Tokyo Foundation, Yoshiaki Sasaki, was quoted as saying that: "Nomination of presidential candidates by political parties and by an initiative group of voters - which have their own political platforms and represent interests of various social groups - creates a basis for resolving a wide range of issues". He added that the alternative nature of the election made it possible to develop "effective recommendations" on developing the democratic reforms in the country.

A member of the French Science Academy was quoted as saying that: "Uzbekistan - which pursues a policy directed at building a democratic state and open society - has capacities to hold elections in compliance with international standards, which is evidenced by the candidates being nominated from political parties and an initiative group of voters".

Other people interviewed in the programme, included a member of the French National Assembly, Roland Blum; the executive director of the Central Asia and Caucasus Research Institute in Japan, Tetsuji Tanaka, and a Ukrainian observer, Sergey Tolstov, who also gave positive assessment of the political developments in the country.

The programme also reported on preparations at polling stations set up in foreign countries.

Representatives of the political parties and the initiative group of voters, which have nominated their candidates for the presidency, gave brief interviews to the programme on the results of their respective election campaigns.

The report concluded by showing preparations at various polling stations across the country.
