Uzbekistan 26/12/2007 Uzbek religious broadcast calls for preserving environment
The host of the programme and chief imam of the city of Tashkent, Anvar hoji Qochqor ogli, called for appreciating nature after interpreting brief verses from the Koran: "Eat and drink. I created pure bounties for you. But do not waste. Allah, the Exalted in Might, dislikes those who waste. Thus, if a servant wastes a blessing, God dislikes him. And if the servant is disliked than he will be far form God. Therefore, in order to avoid being far away from Allah and in order to have a clear and satisfied conscience we must definitely [appreciate] the God-given blessings and nature."

He proceeded to say that the protection of nature goes hand in hand with the development of society. "The development of nature and society are very closely related, if nature remains pure, society will continue to progress; our life will be peaceful and our children will be righteous. It is our duty not to forget this," Anvar hoji Qochqor ogli said.

During the better part of the programme, an unspecified narrator offered examples of the Uzbek people’s long-standing tradition of cherishing water and clean air under the tune of traditional Uzbek string instruments, while the video showed historical cites, picturesque gardens, and various natural bodies of water.

Towards the conclusion of the programme, Tashkent’s chief imam praised efforts to protect the environment by the Ecosan Uzbek environmental organization and acknowledged the contributions of individuals and society at large in cleaning up some neighbourhood areas polluted with rubbish.
