Uzbekistan16/08/2007Uzbek President notes growing role of SCO
Uzbek President Islam Karimov spoke at the SCO Summit in Kyrgyzstan. The President emphasized that SCO was growing in importance as a centre for fright against international extremism, terrorism and drug trade.
"We cannot be undisturbed by the situation in Afghanistan, by the growing production and trafficking of drugs. Afghanistan’s stability should not be sought in further militarization of the country, but in the solution of its internal social problems," he said.
President Karimov emphasized the importance of the agreement on the long-term good neighbourly relations and cooperation. "Central Asia’s reputation increases as the importance of its vast natural resource potential rises. The decisions on the use of the transborder water resources should be made jointly, otherwise we will face an ecological catastrophe. As many as 50 million people depend on the ration use of water resources," he said.
"This Summit and the decisions it reaches will become a new landmark in the development of joint actions and maintenance of security in the countries of the SCO," President Karimov said closing his speech.
