Uzbek President holds talks in London
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, on his way to New York to attend the high-level plenary session of the UN on Millennium Development Goals, made a stop in London, Great Britain.

During his stopover, Uzbek President met with the chairman of the Society of Friendship “Britain-Uzbekistan”, co-chairman of Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council Hartley Booth and chairman of the parliamentary group “UK-Uzbekistan” John Waverley.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov said the development of Uzbek-British relations, in particular, the regularity of the two foreign ministries consultations, enhancing mutual visits of delegations of the supreme legislative bodies, the expansion of cooperation between academia and business.

Also, Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom cooperate on a multilateral basis in the promotion of regional security and the stabilization of situation in Afghanistan.

Such activities like the organization of regular consultations of foreign ministries, the visit of the delegation of the parliamentary group “UK-Uzbekistan” to be held in Westminster International University in Tashkent, the international scientific conference on environmental protection and rational use of waters of trans-boundary rivers will take place this year.

At the end of the year provided for the next meeting of Uzbek-British council on trade and industry. It will also consider expansion of cooperation in the agricultural industry. Uzbekistan has extensive experience in the field of agriculture. Institute of Plant and study the ecology of Great Britain is considered one of the leading relevant research centers in the world. In the long term connection in this direction will be further enhanced.

The next session of Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council will be held at the end of 2010, to consider the expansion of cooperation in the agricultural industry. Uzbekistan has extensive experience in agriculture. The Institutes of Plants and Ecology Studies of Great Britain are considered one of the leading research centers in the world. In the long term, the cooperation in this direction will be further enhanced.

The United Kingdom is one of the major trade partners of Uzbekistan in Europe. About 200 joint ventures in cooperation with British investors operate in Uzbekistan and over 50 British companies have their representative offices.

The UK supports the further development of cooperation with Uzbekistan in the economic and investment fields and in the field of parliamentarism, Hartley Booth and John Waverley noted during the meeting.

The sides also exchanged views on the issues of trade, economic and parliamentary relations between Uzbekistan and UK.
