Uzbekistan 28/06/2007 Uzbek police detain over 6,000 people on drugs charges in 2006

A total of 6,040 people, including 106 foreign citizens, were detained in Uzbekistan in 2006. The amount of drugs seized from them was about 246 kg, Uzbek media outlets report. Of the detainees, 29 are citizens of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan - 25, Turkmenistan - 15, Kazakhstan - 12, Afghanistan - seven, Iran - seven, Turkey - five, Russia - four.

In 2006, Uzbek courts considered 4,367 criminal cases related to drug trafficking, as a result of which 5,490 persons were held criminally responsible, including for illicit cultivation of drug-bearing plants - 621, trade - 2,305, smuggling - 122, storage - 2,021.

It was noted that the number of drug addicts in Uzbekistan had an upward trend. Thus, in 2006, the number of those registered with the dispensaries and clinics in connection with non-medical use of drugs and psychotropic substances was 22,400 people compared with 22,100 in 2005.

There is an upward trend in the number of persons receiving medical aid at clinics for drug addicts. In particular, their number was 6,517 persons in 2006 compared with 5,873 in 2005. In 2006, the number of people turned to clinics for anonymous treatment increased up to 1,945 from 1,584 in 2005.

Over 45% of HIV-infected people in the country are drug addicts.
