Uzbekistan 02/09/2008 Uzbek police detain group which used charity money for extremism - TV
"A criminal group which materially supported leaders and members of an extremist sect has recently been detained. They are accused of taking Zakat from Muslims and spending it for illegal purposes and trouble-making," the film said.

"A member of the Jihadists extremist sect, Murod Ahmedov, materially supported his fellow, Jahongir Khojayev. Another member of the Jihadists sect, Sayfulla Yoldoshev, took alms given by Shokir Qodirov and Qosim Malikov, and handed it over to Jahongir Khojayev. Khojayev delivered the money collected from Murod Ahmedov and Sayfulla Yoldoshev to the head of the extremist sect, Obid Nazarov. Thus, the donation meant for poor people became a means of destruction and subversion," it said.

Murod Ahmedov, a member of the Jihadists religious extremist group, donated US$25,000 to support the group, and was sentenced to five years and six months in prison, the film said.

"I met a young man, Shohruh. In spring 2005, Shohruh told me that one should make a donation to the religion. He explained to me that if a person does not make a donation, his prayers will be in vain. I asked him about it in detail. He explained to me many things. So, after several conversations, I felt as if I was hypnotized by him, and I did not notice how I gave away the money. At that time, I did not know what portion of one’s wealth should be donated, and that one should not pay alms from the assets one uses - the house and the car. First, I gave 4 million soums [about US$2,900]. But I was told that the amount of Zakat should be re-calculated taking into account all assets. I did so, and gave US$25,000. I gave the money, and realized that I did wrong, but it was already impossible to correct the mistake," Murod Ahmedov said.

Sayfulla Yoldoshev, a member of the Jihadists religious extremist group, used to collect Zakat from rich people and deliver it to leaders of the extremist sect, the film said.

"He introduced himself as Abdulla. However, his real name turned out to be Jahongir. He used to eat at our workplace. In 2004, ahead of the month of Ramadan, he came up to me and preached to me, saying that collecting Zakat from rich people and giving it to the needy was a good deed. I asked him what I should do. He told me that I should collect Zakat from rich people living in my neighbourhood. He also said that the money would be given to needy families. I told him that people living in my neighbourhood donated [Zakat] money to their relatives, though I would preach to them to give it to us through appropriate people. So I promoted the idea among businessmen living in our neighbourhood. I took US$1,000 from Jamoliddin, US$500 from Furqat, US$300 from Abdulbosit, US$300 from Abulqosim, US$500 from Abdulaziz, US$200 from Saidali, US$300 from Abulqosim’s brother and delivered the money to Abdulla," Sayfulla Yoldoshev said.

"I listened to sermons delivered by Sayfulla Yoldoshev and paid 300 dollars every year in 2004, 2005 and 2006. I learnt later that he used to spend the Zakat given by us for religious extremist purposes," Qosim Malikov said.

The film later introduced Olim Jorayev, who it said was a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan who took part in acts of terror in Tajikistan and Afghanistan in 2000-05. In 2006, Jorayev was sentenced to 16 years in prison, it added.

"There are special people to collect money. The special people also take advantage of this. I heard about a case when a group of young men fled to Iran with the money," Jorayev said.

The film also showed the chief imam of Tashkent, Anvar qori Tursunov, condemning embezzling Zakat.
