Uzbek media giving "wide coverage" to global crisis
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A news conference devoted to the topical tasks of the Uzbek media has been held at the Uzbek National Press Centre.

At present, over 1,100 various media outlets - newspapers, magazines, information bulletins, news agencies, TV and radio stations and websites - function in the Uzbek information market.

Each publication and agency has its own ways of efficiently informing the people about reforms being carries out in Uzbekistan, the country’s role in the international arena, achievements of our nation in various spheres, and events taking place in the world. For example, at present, the media is widely covering one of the most topical problems of present time: the causes of the global financial crisis, its effects on Uzbekistan, the results of measures stipulated in the anti-crisis programme, which has been adopted at the initiative of the Uzbek president.

However, as it was noted at the news conference, the activities of not all media outlets meet present-day requirements. As a result, certain publications lost their readers in 2008, failing to adapt to the conditions of the market economy or to interest the readers. This has been observed occurring with several regional newspapers.

The news conference thoroughly analysed the activities of Uzbek periodicals, the current state of and prospects for increasing their circulation. Journalists got detailed answers to the questions that interested them.
