Uzbekistan 22/04/2007 Uzbek head, Lithuanian FM discuss relations

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Foreign Minister of Lithuania Petras Vaitiekunas at presidential residence Oqsaroy in Tashkent on 20 April.

 

During the meeting, the sides discussed current affairs and perspectives of bilateral relations, expansion of economic ties and regional and international issues.

 

President Karimov welcomed the guests to Uzbekistan and said there were great opportunities in Uzbekistan and Lithuania to further widen the scope of bilateral relations. He expressed his opinions on how to fully use these opportunities.

 

Uzbek President Islam Karimov said, “I believe your visit to Uzbekistan is fruitful and contributes to further strengthening of our cooperation.”

 

The foreign minister thanked the Uzbek head of state for the reception and said that Lithuania was interested in thoroughly developing relations with Uzbekistan.

 

Petras Vaitieakunas said Lithuania considered Uzbekistan a reliable partner and was eager to develop mutually beneficial cooperation.

 

Trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Lithuania comprised US$42 million in 2006, but the countries could significantly improve this figure, they agreed.

 

The two states are developing political cooperation, including their dialogue and interaction within international organizations. Uzbekistan and Lithuania consider cooperation in fighting terrorism, extremism, drug traffic, arms smuggling and translational organized crime important.
