Economy 29/09/2009 Uzbek FM says water resources is important element of global food industry

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Speaking at the meeting on the Global Food Security Crisis, Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov called to strengthen efforts in water resource management in agriculture, using fresh water, first of all, in food production.

Uzbek official said that this is especially important for Central Asia, where each country should treat responsibly and rationally to use of water resources, from which depends life and security of separate states and the region as a whole.

Norov said currently water supply of the main rivers of the Central Asian regions - Amudarya and Syrdarya - does not exceed 70% of longstanding norms. Uzbek minister said Uzbekistan experiences deficit of spray water at the level of 25-35% from total demand. He underlined that this makes difficult to supply necessary volume of water for drinking water supply and irrigation in the region, where about 65% of population live in rural areas and their life and well0beining directly depends from development of agriculture sector.

Uzbek Foreign Minister said Uzbekistan believes that any wide-scale construction of water reservoirs and hydro power stations and other establishments in basin of transboundary rivers of Central Asia requires mandatory coordination with all countries of the region. “This is set norms of international law,” he added.

Norov called the developed countries to share new technologies on production and processing of agriculture goods with the developing states. He said yield of some types of food crops differs several times. He added that the countries can solve problems of food shortage together.

Uzbek official informed the meeting participants on adopted measures on food security in Uzbekistan and added that Uzbekistan achieved grain independence. He said Uzbekistan annually produces 6 million tonnes of grain and 5-7 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables.
