Uzbek delegation attends Vienna Forum on energy saving
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan participated at the 21st OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum titled “Increasing stability and security: improvement of ecologic constituent in energy events in the OSCE region” on 4-5 February 2013 in Vienna (Austria).

The delegations of 57 countries and international organizations participated at the forum. The participants considered ecologic problems and new opportunities for energy saving, production of electricity and transportation of energy resources, cooperation and role of the OSCE in adoptions of subsequent measures in the result of the Forum.

The forum also considered issues related to renewable energy. It was stated that use of alternative sources of energy increased in last ten years. It was noted that the countries adopted strategies on energy diversification to improve energy independence and security in the context of high and instable prices for fuel. Over 60 countries adopted national programmes for development of renewable energy.

Energy efficiency and saving provide powerful and economically effective tools for achievement of sustainable energy future as well as to manage and control growth of energy consumption.

The Forum also discussed issues on security of dams and other hydraulic engineering objects, including those located at trans-boundary rivers. Old dams and poor maintenance create risks for life and health of people, property and environment. It was said that effective national legislation is key to ensure security of dams.

The Forum noted that the countries should focus on solving ecologic problems and risks, related with energy activities and their consequences for security, sustainable and rational use of energy resources, improve impact to environment at production of energy, transportation and consumption, etc.

Within the visit to Austria, representative of State Committee on nature protection met with employees of the Bureau of the coordinator of the OSCE activities in economy and environment. The meeting was initiated by senior advisor of the OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan Jens Rasmussen.

The sides discussed possible assistance of the OSCE to Regional Center on renewable energy of Central Asia. The delegation also met with local ecologic movements and funds to discuss perspectives of renewable energy development.

The delegation also met with director of department on international affairs on protection of environment of the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management of Austria Elfrid More. The sides exchanged opinion on expansion of cooperation between Uzbekistan and Austria on renewable energy and energy efficiency. The sides also considered organization of study tours for Uzbek specialists to Austria to study experience.

The delegation also discussed perspectives of cooperation with the officials of the Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth.
