UzACI: Number of internet users reaches 8.8m
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Number of Internet users in Uzbekistan reached 8.8 million people in 2011. This was announced at the session of the Board of the Uzbek Agency for Communication and Information dedicated to the results of 2011 and perspectives for 2012.

Director-General of the UzACI Hakim Muhitdinov said that enterprises of communication and information sector rendered services for 2.4 trillion soums, which grew by 19.9% year-on-year. About 65.8% of all income or 1.56 trillion soums were received from services, rendered to population. The export task was fulfilled with 60.8% surplus.

Within the projects, realized due to foreign direct investments and loans, was attracted US$266.7 million or 458.02 billion soums. Besides, the enterprises utilized 72.3 billion soums of own resources.

As of 1 January 2012, number of enterprises, rendering data transfer services, including Internet, reached 945 and number of collective Internet points – 1,053.

Total speed of access to international internet channels made up 4.85 Gbps. Number of internet users reached 8.8 million. The UzACI head said that the price of internet channel for ISPs decreased 2.9 times in 2011. Number of broadband users reached 147,760.

Number of registered domains in UZ domain zone exceeded over 13,400.

In 2011, four sets of digital television broadcasting equipment were delivered to Uzbekistan in line with the agreement of the Center for radio communication, radio broadcasting and television and INVERSON Technologies SA (NEC). The agency said the sets were installed.

It added that citizens of Tashkent city, Tashkent region, Samarkand region, Bukhara region, Khorezm region, Andijan region, Namangan region, Ferghana region, Kashkadarya region and Karakalpakstan can watch digital television, including seven local channels. The agency said that 38% of population of Uzbekistan is covered with digital television. In 2011, Uzbekistan produced 50,500 units of digital tuners for TV sets.

Number of enterprises, specializing on production of software made up 235 units, according to the State Statistics Committee. In line with the Intellectual Property Agency, some 299 software were registered in Uzbekistan.

At the meeting, it was noted that it is planned to use investments for US$176.5 million on 11 projects in 2012. The investments will be used to construction of optic-fiber lines, installation of 89 basic stations, etc.
