Uzbekistan 10/06/2009 USA sees Uzbekistan as possible alternative to station its troops
Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In an article published by the Council on Foreign Relations, Jeffrey Mankoff - associate director of International Security Studies at Yale University and adjunct fellow for Russia Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations - has said that the USA had turned to Uzbekistan as a possible alternative to station its military base, Russian internet news agency Regnum reported.

He also said that the US presence in Central Asia had already started expanding.

"Confronted with increasing instability in Pakistan, the US troops more and more turning to former Soviet Central Asia as an alternative route to send supplies to Afghanistan. Currently, Kyrgyzstan is Washington’s main transit point, but, under Moscow’s pressure, the Kyrgyz government has asked the US troops to leave the Manas air base by August 2009. That is why, the USA has recently addressed Uzbekistan as a possible alternative," the US expert concluded.
