Urgench International Airport resumes operations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – Urgench International Airport resumed its operations on 5 August  2024. The first flight, HY57 by Uzbekistan Airways from Tashkent to Urgench, landed at the airport at 21:55 with 146 passengers on board.

Earlier reports indicated that construction and repair work was completed ahead of schedule, allowing the airport to reopen two days earlier than planned.

The project was carried out by the state-owned enterprise "Urganch yo`llardan muntazam foydalanish," with Niiat, an engineering company, serving as the general designer. The analytical testing of the runway surface was conducted by the Analytical Testing Department of the Institute for the Retraining and Advanced Training of Transport Personnel under the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan.

The airport had suspended operations on 20 July 2024 for major repairs to the runway.

Over the course of two weeks, significant work was completed, including the replacement and reinforcement of the runway surface across its entire length of 3,000 meters and width of 45 meters. Additionally, the second and third taxiways were thoroughly renovated.

These improvements will enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 without restrictions, which is expected to increase the number of flights and passenger traffic to Urgench.
