UNOPS hands over equipment worth US$30 million to the new center of Oncology and Radiology in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The new Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Oncology and Radiology in Tashkent was inaugurated today by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

UNOPS procured more than 500 units of medical, diagnostic, laboratory, radiology equipment for its implementation. The inauguration ceremony was attended by UNOPS Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, Tim Lardner, and Freya von Groote, Director of UNOPS Austria Multi-Country Office, who highlighted the implementation of this cutting-edge medical technology.

The equipment will significantly enhance the capabilities of the new medical center, overall expanding the access and improving quality of oncological healthcare services for cancer patients in Uzbekistan. By the end of this year, a further US$7 million worth of equipment will also be delivered to this facility. The remaining funds of the US$70 million Islamic Development Bank supported project are allocated to other 13 institutions across 13 regions of Uzbekistan, where over US$25 million worth of equipment has already been delivered.

Tim Lardner, UNOPS Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, stated: “The successful delivery of this project underscores UNOPS commitment to supporting Uzbekistan’s healthcare reforms. We are pleased to see how this excellent cooperation with the Ministry of Health supports the country’s 2030 Strategy".

During his visit to Uzbekistan ―the first official visit to a Central Asian country―, the Regional Director reaffirmed UNOPS commitment to strengthening our partnership with the government of Uzbekistan to achieve its national development goals by enhancing the country’s infrastructure, sustainable procurement, and project management.
