UNFPA in Uzbekistan supports initiatives on marking World AIDS Day
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 1 December, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Uzbekistan marks the annual World AIDS Day through supporting a number of local initiatives in Tashkent and Samarkand cities of Uzbekistan, the organization said in a press release.

HIV Prevention Campaign organized by BIOEKOSAN NGO and Kelajak Ovozi Youth Initiatives Centre takes place in a secondary school No. 34 of Tashkent city and includes the set of interactive activities for over 200 students of 8th and 9th grades that include theatre performance on stigma and discrimination, drawing exhibition and HIV quiz.

All activities were prepared by peer educators who volunteer for various public organizations and are members of Y-PEER Network pioneered by UNFPA.

Youth AIDS Campaign organized by Kelajak Ovozi Youth Initiatives Centre, Kamolot National Youth Movement and Tengdoshim NGO in Samarkand, brings together over 500 young people to take part in the events aimed at raising young people’s awareness on HIV prevention issues through games and presentations as well as information materials dissemination.

"This year’s message for World AIDS Day is "I am living my rights" and it refers to the rights of people living with HIV. This is the reason why the play, quiz, drawing exhibition and other interesting and meaningful activities prepared by young people of Uzbekistan for their peers are tailored in a way that describes the injustices and discrimination people living with HIV have to face, and call for combating stigma and discrimination," commented Nuzhat Ehsan, UNFPA Representative a.i. in Uzbekistan.

"By supporting the initiatives of our national partners we wish to emphasize the important role young people play in combating AIDS pandemic worldwide as we believe that knowledge, skills, enthusiasm, experience, creativity and dedication of young people can contribute in reducing and preventing the spread of HIV infection."

UNFPA is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programs to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.
