Uzbekistan 13/08/2008 UNFPA conducts celebration of International Youth Day in Uzbekistan

This holiday was accepted by the UN General Assembly in 1999 and is being celebrated in Uzbekistan for the third time. This day is targeted at attracting attention to youth activities and reminds that young people play great role in the future of each country, UNFPA in Uzbekistan said in its press release.

The theme for this year’s observance of International Youth Day is "Youth and climate change: time for action". Today’s young people will bear the consequences of climate change, thanks to the unfortunate legacy of their elders.

However, as stated by Ms. Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, UNFPA Executive Director, "Young people must be involved in the development and implementation of plans, policies and programmes impacting the environment. They can engage their communities to find solutions to reduce the impacts of climate change. They can ensure that we meet the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
