UNFCCC registers seventh CDM project of Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Executive Board of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) registered the seventh projects of Uzbekistan within the framework of the Clean Development (CDM) Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol.

UNFCCC registered Akhangaran Landfill Gas Capture Project in Tashkent, which will be realized by the Mahsustrans (Waste Processing Enterprise) of Tashkent administration with Japan’s Shimizu Corporation.

The project envisages implementation of the system on controlled utilization of landfill gas, which serves as source for spontaneous ignition at waste landfills and allows to cut emission of greenhouse gases by 85,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalen a year. Annual income from sales of certified emission reductions will be 850,000 euros.

It is worth to mention that UNFCCC registered six CDM projects in March-April 2009 for three chemical enterprises of Uzkimyosanoat state joint stock company. Mitsubishi Corporation finances these projects due to attracted loans and it will get certified emission reductions in return.

The project will cut 1.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year and the sides will receive 10 million euros a year. The purchase period of certified emission reductions is from 2009 to 2019. The Uzbek side will receive 80% of income from sale of certified emission reductions and Mitsubishi - 20%.

The commercial realization of five projects at Navoiazot and Maxam-Chirchiq has been started and on the project of Ferghanaazot will be started by March 2010.

Uzbekistan has wide opportunities for realization of the CDM projects in such sectors of economy as energy, oil and gas, chemistry, communal sector, agriculture and others.

Currently, Uzbekistan has developed over 70 CDM projects in assistance of the UNDP. The projects are in various stages of development from developing project application, search of investors to submitting project document to the UN registration.
