Uzbekistan 14/09/2009 UNDP Uzbekistan marks International Day of Democracy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- UNDP has held a series of events to mark this year’s International Day of Democracy, 15 September. Among them are a radio quiz on democracy and human rights as well as a series of presentations on Democracy in various regions of .

A radio quiz is being aired by a popular O’zbegim Taronasi radio station on 10-15 September 2009. The first quiz broadcast on Thursday evening brought the first winner, a native of an ancient city of Bukhara. UNDP will award all winners on 17 September in its premises in downtown Tashkent.

A series of presentations and roundtables on Democracy kicked off in Navoi on 9 September and has been followed by events in Urgench, Andijan and Ferghana. They target NGOs, women’s movements, youth and media.

15 September 2009 marks the Second International Day of Democracy, designated by UN General Assembly, "to focus attention on the promotion and consolidation of democracy at all levels and to reinforce international cooperation in this regard".

The theme of the 2009 International Day of Democracy is Democracy and Political Tolerance, UNDP Uzbekistan said.

Supporting democratic aspirations and processes at national and local levels has been one of major areas of UNDP’s work contributing to the broader goals of international peace and security and human development. This Day presents a significant opportunity to reflect on the importance of democracy and serves as a reminder that promotion and protection of democracy remains central to the work in the United Nations.

UNDP Uzbekistan has worked in the area of Democratic Governance since opening its office in Tashkent in January 1993. Through its Good Governance Unit, UNDP partners with the Uzbek Government, Parliament and civil society, and works with various target groups, among which are youth, people with disability and women.
