UN: World refugee reaches record 48 million

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The number of internally displaced persons as a result of conflicts in the world has reached 48 million, which is a record figure. This was stated by the UN Special Rapporteur on Internally Displaced Persons Cecilla Jimenez-Damari at the Third Committee of the General Assembly of the world organization, TASS reports.

“The number of people displaced by armed conflict and violence has reached 48 million worldwide, the highest ever recorded,” said Cecilla Jimenez-Damari.

In an increasingly complex environment of armed conflict and widespread violence, she said, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure respect for international humanitarian and human rights law.

As the Special Rapporteur noted, conflicts and violence in the world can also be exacerbated by natural disasters leading to population displacement and, starting in 2020, a pandemic.
