UN says CA efforts on fighting drug trafficking is weak
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Some 90 tonnes of heroin transported annually through Central Asia and only 3% of them are seized by the law enforcement bodies, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said.

Income from sales of this heroin is rated at US$1.4 billion a year, which makes up 65% of income part of the state budget of Tajikistan for 2012.

Annually 90 tonnes of heroin is transported through Central Asia, which is a quarter of total volume of heroin, exported from Afghanistan, UNODC said. The government officials detained only about 3% of these drugs despite assistance of the international community and this volume is decreasing. The UNODC said that the efforts of the Central Asian states in fighting illegal narcotics trafficking are weak.

Earlier, UNODC believed that at least 20% of Afghan opiats are transported through northern route. The UN said that the opium production grew in Afghanistan from 3,600 tonnes in 2010 to 5,800 tonnes in 2011. From each tonne of opium, it is possible to receive about 100 kg of heroin. Afghanistan produces 90% of total opium, produced in the world.
