UEFA President says Uzbekistan is a football country
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of UEFA led by its President Michel Platini arrived in Tashkent on 11 October 2012, the Uzbekistan Football Federation (UFF) said.

In the second half of the day, UEFA President Michel Platini held a meeting with the UFF President Mirabrar Usmanov at the headquarters of the Uzbek football governing body.

During the meeting, Mirabrar Usmanov said that he is happy to see the UEFA delegation in Uzbekistan. He expressed hope that the visit to Uzbekistan will impress the delegation.

Addressing to Michel Platini, the UFF President said that Uzbekistan pays great attention to development of football. In last three years, Uzbekistan constructed seven stadiums and 12 football schools under the professional football clubs, he said.

Mirabrar Usmanov said that the Uzbek clubs regularly participate at the AFC Champions League and recently Uzbekistan U-16 won the Asian Championship in Iran. He said Uzbekistan U-19 will participate in similar tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

He said that Uzbekistan national team is playing in qualifiers to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Uzbekistan face Qatar on 16 October. He said that victory of Uzbekistan will improve chances to qualify to the World Cup. He said that the nation hopes that Uzbekistan will qualify to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

UEFA President Michel Platini shared with his first impressions about Uzbekistan. He expressed gratitude for warm welcome of the delegation. He said he is happy to be in such beautiful country as Uzbekistan. He said that he knows Uzbekistan’s football is developing and the government plays key role in this. Platini said that in such relation to football, Uzbekistan will be successful in future. He said he promised to visit Uzbekistan last year and he kept his word.

After presentation of the UFF President and visit to the UFF office, he said Uzbekistan is a football country. He said that Uzbekistan is one of leading football countries in the region as it is continuing to fight for World Cup berth.

Michel Platini added that UEFA helps the Associations in its region financially and it shares advices with other nations. He said that visiting Uzbekistan, he understood that the country does not need any help. He said Uzbekistan is correct path of development. He added that instead Uzbekistan can help the UEFA in some issues, including in refereeing.

UEFA chief said that Uzbekistan has one of the leading referees in the world, which is great honour for Uzbekistan. He said that UEFA has huge opportunities and can help Uzbekistan in developing marketing, infrastructure and other directions. He said UEFA is ready to share with its advices.

In his turn, UFF chief Mirabrar Usmanov called the UEFA president to assist to organize friendly matches between Uzbekistan and the European teams if the country books berth in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He said Uzbekistan needs to play two-three matches with European teams.

Michel Platini added that he is ready to consider the issue and he said it is wise decision. However, he said it is difficult issue as Europe has rich calendar. He added that UEFA will try to help arrange a match with the Latin American country, which will organize training in Europe.

The UEFA delegation later familiarized with Pakhtakor stadium and newly constructed Bunyodkor sport complex. The delegation also met with the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyayev.
