Trump Threatens New Tariffs Against BRICS Countries and Their Allies

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the potential introduction of additional tariffs targeting countries that support BRICS policies, Deutsche Welle reports.

His statement came in response to criticism contained in the final declaration of the BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, where member states condemned the use of “unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures.”

“Any country that joins BRICS’s anti-American agenda will face an additional 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Although the official BRICS declaration did not mention the United States or Trump by name, AFP described the document as “a clear political message directed at the White House.”

The declaration expressed “serious concern” about the growing use of unilateral restrictions, which BRICS leaders said distort trade, contradict WTO rules, disrupt global supply chains, and risk worsening economic imbalances.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that Washington plans to reinstate tariffs starting August 1 for countries with which no trade agreements have been reached. These tariffs had previously been postponed by Trump in April.

The standard tariff rate is expected to be 10%, though it could be significantly higher for certain countries.

It’s worth recalling that in late 2024, Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs if BRICS moved ahead with the creation of a joint currency to rival the U.S. dollar. At the time, he warned that “any country trying to replace the dollar can say goodbye to the American market.”

The idea of a BRICS reserve currency based on a basket of member currencies was previously proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, though he later admitted the bloc was not yet ready to implement it.

Currently, BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Indonesia having joined in 2024. Together, BRICS countries account for nearly half of the world’s population and close to 40% of global GDP.
