Uzbekistan 23/04/2009 Training on prevention of human trafficking and family conflicts takes place in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- UNDP, Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Interior and General Prosecutor’s Office of Uzbekistan organized and carried out a two-day training for the representatives of the Ministry of Interior and district policemen on “The role of the district policemen in prevention of human trafficking and family conflicts” in Tashkent on 21-22 April.

The main goal of the training was enhancing skills and knowledge of district policemen, who are the focal points for the cases of family conflicts examination, as well as realization of measures on prevention of human trafficking.

The training agenda included theoretical and practical exercises. During the training participants got acquainted with issues of women’s rights violation, family conflict resolution and prevention of human trafficking, with international and national standards on women’s rights, as well as with the skill of planning of actions and practice of prevention of human trafficking and family conflicts.

The UNDP project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan” is implementing in cooperation with the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan. The project is directed at supporting and building the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) to Uzbekistan that were given in August 2006.

The CEDAW Convention adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is an international document on the rights of women. Uzbekistan was the first Central Asian country to ratify the convention in 1995 and has reported four times to the CEDAW Committee on its implementation.
