Training for police officers on protection of women’s and children’s rights in families held
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- UNDP, Uzbekistan Women’s Committee, and Ministry of Interior Affairs jointly organized training for local police officers on the issues of protecting women and children in family in Jizzakh. The training was aimed at improving knowledge and skills of inspectors on preventing family conflicts.

The training agenda included both theoretical studies and practical exercises. Participants got acquainted with issues of violation of women’s rights, settlement of family conflicts and preventing human trafficking, national and international norms in these areas, as well as planning of next actions.

Participants discussed such issues as existing mechanisms on protection of women in economic and social spheres, analysis on committed crimes against women and harmonization of legislation, and the role of district police officers in preventing family conflicts.

Towards end of the training, participants exchanged experience in these areas. They shared with each other concrete facts and situations on preventing of family conflicts. Besides, they developed action plan based on their experiences and lessons learned.

The UNDP project ’Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan’ has been implemented in collaboration with the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan. The project is aimed at supporting and building the capacity of government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness on and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) given to Uzbekistan in August 2006.

The CEDAW Convention adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly is an international document on the rights of women. Uzbekistan was one of the first Central Asian countries to ratify the convention in 1995. It has reported four times to the CEDAW Committee on its implementation.
