The Second Meeting of the Amu Darya Basin Dialogue Kicks Off in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The second meeting of the Amu Darya Basin Dialogue is currently underway in the capital of Uzbekistan.

The event is organized under the initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with financial support from the European Union and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The program is implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH.

The meeting has brought together representatives from all Central Asian countries, including foreign ministries, relevant sectoral ministries, hydrometeorological agencies, and international partners.

Enhancing Regional Cooperation: Developing tools for water resource monitoring and planning in the context of climate change, based on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles.

Presentation and Discussion of Pilot Projects: Reviewing projects agreed upon by participating countries within the GIZ|SDC|EU water management program.

Sharing Best Practices: Exchanging experiences in water resource management and improving related infrastructure in the Syr Darya River basin.

Climate Resilience: Advancing infrastructure and improving river flow monitoring and forecasting using modern approaches, including the Nexus approach.

Preparations for the International Syr Darya River Day in 2025.

Dr. Karolina Milow, Head of the GIZ Program "Climate-Resilient Water Management in Central Asia":

"Our program supports regional cooperation in water management for both the Amu Darya and Syr Darya basins. It is encouraging to see the joint efforts of the EU, Germany, and Switzerland strengthening our collective work."

The meeting underscored the importance of international collaboration in addressing water-related challenges in Central Asia, reaffirming the critical role of partnerships in achieving sustainable and climate-resilient water management.
