The number of senators may be reduced to 65

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan plans to reduce the number of senators from 100 to 65. This measure is envisaged in the draft of the country’s new Constitution.

The draft constitution proposes to increase the absolute powers of the Senate from the current 14 to 18. In particular, as a body representing territorial interests, the Constitution strengthens such important powers of the Senate as promoting the activities of local representative bodies, said Jahangir Shirinov, deputy of the Legislative Chamber.

One of the other conceptual changes in this direction is to increase the efficiency of the Senate by compacting its structure based on administrative reforms, he noted.

To this end, the number of senators will be reduced from the current 100 to 65. The current procedure for the formation of the Senate has been preserved.

New norms determining the quantitative composition of the Senate are planned to be introduced from the moment the Senate of the next convocation is formed in 2024, said Jahangir Shirinov.
