The capital of Kazakhstan renamed to Astana

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Kazakh parliament adopted amendments to the country’s Constitution establishing a seven-year presidential term and renaming the capital to Astana, the press service of the country’s majilis (parliament) said in a statement.

The first set of amendments involved limiting the president’s mandate and establishing a one-time seven-year term, according to a statement on the parliament’s website.

Other amendments proposed extending the terms of office of constitutional court judges to eight years, limiting reappointment, and changing the name of the country’s capital to Astana.

In early September, the Zhana Kazakhstan (New Kazakhstan) deputy group proposed returning the name Astana to the capital. According to parliamentarians, it is wrong to call a city after a person during his lifetime. In addition, the deputies believe that the return of the former name meets the expectations of the people, who did not accept the renaming of the city.

The press secretary of the head of Kazakhstan said that the proposal to return the capital of the republic to its former name Astana is included in the draft amendments to the Constitution, which are sent to the Constitutional Council.
