The appeal of family members of 44 people convicted of riots in Nukus was resolved positively

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Family members and relatives of 22 and 39 people turned to the Independent Commission for practical assistance in organizing additional short-term meetings with convicts.

In total, during the trials held in Bukhara region in the case of the riots in Nukus, 61 people were convicted, 16 of them were released from the courtroom, one person died.

This appeal, sent by the relatives of 44 convicts, was studied by members of the Commission for an independent investigation of the circumstances and events that occurred in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and a petition was sent to the Supreme Court for a positive resolution of the appeal. On the basis of the principle of humanism, the petition was granted.

After that, the Commission applied to the Jokargy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan to organize meetings with family members of convicts held in the pre-trial detention center of Bukhara region and to cover travel expenses, as well as to the pre-trial detention center of the Department for the Execution of Punishments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to prepare the necessary conditions for short-term meetings.

As a result, on 30 March 2023, short-term meetings were organized with 77 family members and relatives of 39 convicts held in pre-trial detention centers. Relatives of the remaining 5 convicts stated that they would not participate in the meetings.
